Anode Again

My first attempt at prepping an anode = Epic Fail

It was sort of disheartening, so I pushed the project to the side.

It’s time to give it another go. I jury rigged a donated anode. Who knows if the experiment will work, but it’s worth a try.

I’d like to hear more about this – are there no anodes at all installed on the Falls?

      Hi Buck.

There are no anodes on the ship at this time. She used to have an impressed current cathodic protection system for the exterior of the hull and sacrificial anodes in the interior of the cargo tanks (water in the tanks is being used as ballast).

The impressed current system was installed but not maintained properly, so it hadn’t been working for a number of years. The previous owner bought new parts, but they were never installed. The box was stripped out of the ship by the previous owner when the ship was being prepped for scuttling.

The anodes on the insides of the tanks are pretty much corroded. What remains of them are hanging above the current water level in the tanks.

We had a corrosion engineer look at the hull. In his opinion, due to the poor condition of the hull, installing any sort of cathodic system at this time would be a waste of time and money.
